Onshape Troubleshooting
The Onshape Integration options have been tested against a number of scenarios and any reasonable measure has been taken to prevent issues. However, despite this, problems can occur. This page is intended to provide some general guidance in evaluating and troubleshooting possible issues.
- File is far too large/small on screen
- STL, OBJ and several other file formats do not contain information about the units that the values are written in. STEP (and other CAD formats) use a specific unit of measurement. During the import, a unit (based on the user's regional settings) is assumed and used for all import and export. If the settings are wrong, the resultant output can be incorrectly scaled (usually by a factor of 1000, 25.4 or their reciprocals). To correct this, select the corresponding units from the Settings on the Main Window screen or perform a scaling operation.
- Conversion Stops during "Writing Body/Bodies/Edges/..." or "Uploading"
- Unless the application displays an error message or the screen freezes/crashes (and the CPU stops processing data as shown on the task manager accessible by Ctrl+Shift+Esc), the application is likely still doing what it is supposed to. Large files will take a very large amount of resources (10,000-100,000 facets is a reasonably large file). Similarly, uploading can take a long time over a slow connection (10,000 facets can generate files in the order of 100Mb). The interface is currently setup and designed to handle 30,000 facets without any major delays. This is the suggested upper limit for working with files intended to be used by/through Onshape.
- Cannot Sign In
- Please verify that your Onshape account is active (try signing in to the web based application). The sign in is generally performed over the internet and as such items that would usually complicate the connection (proxy servers, firewalls, anti-virus applications, etc.) can be a source of issues.
- Cannot see all files in File Explorer
- The File Explorer is designed to only show files that can be manipulated. If files are locked to prevent the required interactions, they will generally not show up.
- Importing CAD file generates an error
- Only the provided formats are supported and only within a range of versions (see the Onshape site for details). Even though PRT files are supported, they are only supported for files generated by CREO, not other applications that happen to also generate prt files (such as NX or similar). If in doubt, log in to the Onshape application and try importing the file manually.
