From time to time we will start certain projects in-house for the purpose of solving a particular problem or with the expectation to put them on sale at a later point. Background:

We tried using a number of cheap or free 3D scanning applications to quickly generate a suitable 3D representation that we could use for either placing an existing component in a design space or to define a background environment.
On the side of the small and detailed objects, we found that MACH3 allows for highly accurate 3D Point data generation using the built-in Probing Wizard. Our InStep application allows import and conversion of that data into a 3D surface and solid for use in CAD applications. On the Larger volume side, we tried different applications but ended up needing other features. For that reason we put together a simple application that would use the Microsoft® Kinect v1 Sensor to capture single frame depth data and export that data to a 3D file (.OBJ format).

Currently only works with Kinect for Windows v1 and Kinect for XBox 360 v1. Kinect for Windows V2 may be implemented if there is sufficient interest (though only for Win8+).

Background:

Several nesting applications exist to place 2D shapes in a space to optimize material consumption on laser cutters and routers and similar machines. This application is intended to do the same for a complete set of 3D CAM paths whereby a single part can be exported from a CAM application and the resultant path information then distributed over the available space whilst keeping the full definition of tools, feeds, speeds and other items and only transforming the path data as necessary. The idea is that a small part can be processed through a CAM application and the resultant G-Code then duplicated as needed by the machinist to fill a sheet of parts or similar. Different options for how the part is laid out are included (automatic nesting is currently not).
